Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi paid a visit to Notohadinegoro Airport in Jember, East Java, on Sunday to oversee its development.
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has targeted for the development to complete by 2019.
Budi said the expansion would help improve connectivity and support tourism in Jember as well as its neighboring cities, such as Surabaya and Bali.
“With this development, the airport will be able to accommodate up to 360,000 passengers per year,” said Budi.
The development of the runway and airport is said to be conducted in 2019, while a second development phase that includes runway extension and other facilities to support haj flights will kick off after 2019.
“The budget for this project is Rp 370 billion [US$27.74 million],” added Budi.
The city of Jember has been gaining international recognition due to the popularity of Jember Fashion Carnaval. Tourism Minister Arief Yahya has even named the city ‘the World Carnival City’.
